Earleen Bosley has been feeding students at Enosburg Falls Elementary School for over four decades, and became a Harvest of the Month participant last year. Every month, the school is celebrating the harvest through taste tests, educational activities, and outreach to parents and families.
Students have the opportunity to taste that month's featured harvest on the lunch line every week- last month, sample dishes included sweet potato hummus, baked sweet potatoes, and sweet potato muffins (yum!). Earleen tries to work with area farmers to source locally when possible, but also uses the taste tests are a time to engage students around new foods and recipes. Although the school does not use a formal voting system to gather feedback on taste tests, these tastings still provide an opportunity for children to have a discussion about what they're eating and where it comes from.
Students at Enosburg Falls are not only seeing the Harvest of the Month in the cafeteria, but are also learning about it in the school library. Librarian Joanne Allen leads students in hands-on activities, such as designing bookmarks with recipes on them, and also reads students books relating to that month's harvest. Each month, families receive the Harvest of the Month home flyer with recipes, storage tips, and information on the featured crop. The school's lobby also featured a bulletin board with HOM posters and resources.
